Virgo New Moon

September 8, 2010: Virgo New Moon (exact at 3:30 am PDT)

“Are You Being Served?” is not only the name of a BBC comedy show but it is also a mantra that we are called upon to embrace during the Virgo New Moon. As Virgo is dedicated to helping and healing, today is a great day to focus our energies on being of service to others as well as showing gratitude to those who have extended themselves graciously to us.

During the Virgo New Moon, there’s also a focus on arts and crafts. If you are working on a creative project, you may find the additional attention to detail you need in order to further refine your creation. If you’ve considered venturing into a new hobby—knitting, cooking, jewelry making, or something else that’s caught your fancy—the Virgo New Moon may provide you with just the tools and motivation you need to embark upon your new artful enterprise.

Given Virgo’s propensity for pickiness and perfection, be aware of a tendency towards hyper-criticism during this New Moon period. This is especially important now since Mercury is still retrograde in Virgo—leading to the potential for misconstrued understandings. Additionally, Venus moves into stir-the-pot Scorpio today while Jupiter is standing on the Aries Point, about to swim back into Pisces. One way to constructively use the energies of Mercury, Venus, and Jupiter would be to pull back deep within the recesses of your mind and heart to intuitively discern effective ways to solve a problem or approach a situation.

This month’s New Moon falls at 16 degrees of Virgo (Sun and Moon). While everyone experiences the energies of the New Moon, if you have planets or pivotal points (i.e., Ascendant/Descendant or Nadir/Midheaven) around this degree in Virgo or the other mutable signs—Gemini, Sagittarius, Pisces—it may impact you more intensely.

New Moon Apothecary Suggestions

Virgo rules the small intestines and digestive system. Pay extra attention to these parts of the body around the time of this New Moon.

Pine flower essence: A striving for wanting things “just so” can be motivating in terms of creating order and beauty in our lives but, if not contained, it can lead to self-criticism and judgment that can sabotage our happiness. If you need some extra assistance releasing feelings of self-directed reproach and finding the forgiveness within that you deserve, consider Pine flower essence. (Flower essences are made from flower-infused water and work energetically to restore emotional and mental balance. You can find them in natural food stores or holistic pharmacies.)

Melissa (lemon balm): Melissa essential oil is a fragrant way to relax and dispel anxiety. Use some in a bath or unscented body lotion. Make a melissa-scented calming room spray by adding a few drops to a mister bottle filled with water. Check the labels carefully and buy a high quality product as less expensive melissa oils are sometimes adulterated with citronella or lemongrass.

September 8, 2010: Jupiter in Pisces

Every year, Jupiter—the planet of expansion, higher education, and philosophy—sojourns into a new sign, casting its glow on the realms of life represented by this zodiacal placement. Where Jupiter is placed represents the areas of our society that are highlighted and experience growth as well as where we may individually seek a path towards greater understanding.

Today, Jupiter moves from individualistic, initiating Aries (where it’s been since June 6, 2010) back into compassionate and artistic Pisces, where it will be through January 22, 2011 (at which time it moves back into Aries). Jupiter was in Pisces earlier this year, from January 17 through June 6.

As Jupiter once again strides through Pisces, our collective awareness may turn to such realms as the oceans, fish, artistry, mysticism, glamour and fashion, the cinema, heightened compassion, and a sense of the unity of it all. Pisces represent the ideal, the space where we are all connected, where universal and unconditional love exists.

As we may strive for this, this isn’t oftentimes what our “reality” reflects. So when there is heightened Piscean energy—such as when a planet resides in this sign—there may be a greater urge to want to numb the feeling of disillusionment we may feel. For some, this may be through substances—drugs, alcohol, or food—while for others this may be through activities such as shopping or television watching. It’s especially important to be extra vigilant during this time if we find that our desire to escape becomes self-sabotaging to our health, relationships, and/or general life course.

As Pisces also carries with it great inspirational energies, we can tap into these as a means to help work through the feelings of sorrow, confusion, or disappointment to which we may be connecting. For example, as Pisces allows us to fuse with the unseen, it can help usher in a great wave of artistry. Regardless of the medium—whether it be painting, photography, poetry, music, et al.—channeling Jupiter in Pisces energy through acts of creativity can be nurturing and healing.

With Pisces being the sign of the mystic and the coalesced everything, tides of spirituality may peak during this time, becoming more apparent and accessible. Practices such as prayer, meditation, yoga, ecstatic dance, and kirtans can be especially uplifting as we embark on the Jupiterian journey through Pisces.

As Jupiter once again travels through the late degrees of Pisces, those with planets or pivotal points (i.e., Ascendant/Descendant or Nadir/Midheaven) in 23-30 degrees of this sign may experience a sense of expansion. Unforeseen luck may very much come their way. While new opportunities and lessons may present themselves, it’s always important when Jupiter’s activating your personal chart to still be diligent and not rest upon laurels. This way the gifts you receive can be transformed from the potentially ephemeral to those that can take root.

September 23: Libra/Aries Full Moon (exact at 2:17 am PDT)

The Libra/Aries Full Moon reminds us that within relationships three participants are present–the I, the You, and the We—all with unique needs of their own. Today, we can gain additional insight into how the I and the You make the We and how the equation is more exponential than additive, as the relationship is its own entity, having its own personality and existence. We can see how we can contribute to a relationship and derive so much from it, but that inherently it is separate than the individuals that comprise it.

As this is the Full Moon appearing closest to the Autumnal Equinox, it is also the Harvest Moon, where Luna appears bigger and brighter than normal. It’s given this name because the extra light that it expresses provides farmers with additional time to work in their fields, gathering their precious crops. We can use the symbolism of the Moon’s radiance to help us illuminate where imbalances may exist in our relationships.

The path to these realizations and the work required to find accord may not necessarily be filled with complete poise and unfettered ease. After all, the Moon—which signifies our needs and what feels good to us—is in the sign of Aries. While Libra can express much patience, the concept of watching, planning, and waiting is relatively foreign to Aries. It wants things now, or before now. Therefore, be aware of the potential for outbursts of impatience or irritability. Yet, the influx of Aries energy isn’t necessarily negative; the Moon in this fiery sign can provide us with the spark that we need to express ourselves and get things accomplished.

This month’s Full Moon falls at 0 degrees of Libra (Sun) and Aries (Moon). This degree is known as the Aries Point. When planets fall on the Aries Point, a position that connects the personal to the collective, we are reminded that what happens to the individual impacts the world and what happens in the world impacts the individual.

While everyone experiences the energies of a Full Moon, if you have planets or pivotal points (i.e., Ascendant/Descendant or Nadir/Midheaven) around 0 degrees in Libra, Aries, or the other cardinal signs—Capricorn and Cancer—it may impact you more intensely.

Full Moon Apothecary Suggestions

Libra is associated with the skin, lower back, and blood sugar balance while Aries is associated with the head, muscles, and circulatory system. Pay extra attention to these parts of the body and areas of health around the time of this Full Moon.

Vetiver: Vetiver essential oil helps to calm pitta, dispelling the excess Aries heat and inflammatory energy associated with this Ayurvedic dosha. In addition to its calming and grounding effects, vetiver is rejuvenating for the Libra-ruled skin. Mix a few drops with some unscented massage oil for an all-over restorative experience. Or, carry a vial of vetiver with you, inhaling its fragrance whenever you need to relax and restore your grounded focus. As with all essential oils, it’s best to purchase vetiver from a high-quality, reputable manufacturer.

Partner Yoga: One example of an exercise ritual that can be shared by two people, partner yoga is a fun and relationship-building way to stay in shape. By relying upon another person to help you achieve greater depth and grace in asanas (poses), partner yoga can help you to strengthen and fortify your body, mind, and relationship. Inquire with your local yoga studios to see if they offer partner yoga classes and/or look into the various books and DVDs available on the subject.

September 4, 2009: Virgo/Pisces Full Moon (exact at 9:03 am PDT)

The Virgo/Pisces Full Moon can be an auspicious time for healing. We have at our disposal the ability to connect to the body (Virgo) and our intuition (Pisces). If your health has been less than abundant, or you’re just looking to feel even more vital, taking the time to focus in how to enhance your wellness during this Full Moon may prove very productive.

Use your discerning, critical eye (Virgo) to deduce how different physical and emotional factors may be combining to paint the current picture of your health. Then, sit quietly with these insights (Pisces), allowing conscious knowingness to emerge from a place deep within you and inform you on ways to proceed. The combination of Virgoan and Piscean energy can be a powerful elixir for our health as well as provide solutions to dis-ease in other areas of our life.

Be aware, though, that during a Virgo/Pisces Full Moon, we may be pulled toward feelings of melancholy, to sensing whispers of sorrow caused by disillusionment. After all, both Virgo and Pisces yield a desire for perfection and idealism, and “reality” oftentimes doesn’t match up to how we desire life to be. It’s especially important during this celestial event to remember to practice compassion—for yourself and others—and to accept that even in imperfection, beauty and grace reside.

This month’s Full Moon falls at 12 degrees of Virgo (Sun) and Pisces (Moon). While everyone experiences the energies of a Full Moon, if you have planets or pivotal points (i.e., Ascendant/Descendant or Nadir/Midheaven) around this degree in Virgo, Pisces, or the other mutable signs—Gemini and Sagittarius—it may impact you more intensely.

Full Moon Apothecary Suggestions

Virgo is associated with the small intestines and digestive system while Pisces rules the feet, immune/lymphatic systems, and pineal gland. Pay extra attention to these parts of the body around the time of this Full Moon.

Reflexology: As Pisces rules the feet, when the Moon is in this sign, reflexology can be an especially lovely activity to engage in. The massaging of pressure points on the feet can help to circulate energy and quell Virgoan-inspired anxiety. Additionally, working on the digestive system points, concentrated between the ball of the foot and the heel, can support Virgo-associated gastrointestinal health.

Prayers for healing: With the Moon in spiritually oriented Pisces, it’s a wonderful time to invoke the power of faith in the promotion of healing. This need not be a complex activity nor one necessarily infused with religious meaning. Rather, just focus upon yourself—or another whose health could benefit from assistance—and say a prayer of hopes and wishes for betterment. If it feels right, invite others to join a prayer circle. Prayer may seem simple, yet it can be so very powerful.

September 6–September 29, 2009: Mercury Retrograde

Retrograde periods are times for reflection and heightened inner awareness. Since Mercury symbolizes communication, they way we learn, our siblings, and our neighborhood, this period can yield great insights in related areas of your life. Mercury retrograde lasts about three weeks and occurs three to four times per year; the last one took place May 6-30.

Mercury represents the bridges and channels that allow us to connect varied pieces of information in order to synthesize them into the whole of understanding. During Mercury retrograde periods, the inherent weaknesses of these conduits may be revealed. As such, this period is known for the breakdown of tools that help us to share information (such as phones, computers, and printers) and well as those that assist us as we move from place to place (such as cars, bikes, and buses); therefore, do what you can to make sure they are in good working order. With data and information transfer stressed, it’s a great time to ensure you’re backing up your hard drive, keeping track of whether you’re due for an oil change, or inventorying your supply of back-up batteries necessary for the remote or your child’s favorite toy.

Any planetary retrograde reflects a period where the energy is focused more internally. Therefore, it’s a wonderful time to turn communication inward to seek insights and understanding. Meditation, journaling, and nondominant handwriting are great activities to do during Mercury retrograde to help you find the pieces of the puzzle and the teachings of wisdom that you seek.

While inner reflection is heightened, external communication may be stressed. Therefore, try to avoid misunderstandings by being extra diligent about the words you use, while also making sure to listen even more attentively than usual. Whether it be with writing or speaking, put a little extra effort into dotting your I’s and crossing your T’s. Be especially aware of this if you have to sign any binding contract during Mercury retrograde (putting off doing so if possible), as oftentimes all of the information you need to make a decision isn’t available or especially clear.

When you think of how to approach this period, just remember the first two letters of the word retrograde—“re”—and apply it to the activities you undertake. As such, Mercury retrograde periods are a great time to reassess, review, reanalyze, revisit, rethink, re-edit, and recommunicate.

During this retrograde period, Mercury travels from 6 degrees Libra to 22 degrees Virgo. While everyone experiences the energies of Mercury retrograde, if you have planets or pivotal points (i.e., Ascendant/Descendant or Nadir/Midheaven) around or aspecting these degrees, it may impact you more intensely.

Mercury Retrograde Apothecary Suggestions

Nondominant handwriting: This exercise is easy to do and takes minimal time commitment. Just think of a question that you want an answer to, something that you’ve been pondering. Then pick up a pen or pencil and place it in your nondominant hand (the left one for righties, and the right one for lefties) and write out the answer on paper. Write freely and don’t judge what may seem like chicken scratch. The beauty of this exercise is that by using our opposite hand we are able to able to access more of our subsconcious mind and tap into our intuitive knowingness. What you compose on the paper should provide you with an insightful perspective on your question.

“Spring cleaning”: Mercury retrograde is a great time to literally clean your closets. That’s because our abilities to reassess, reevaluate, and reconsider are heightened. Cleaning closets can be wonderfully therapeutic: It provides a trip down memory lane and it also helps us to unburden ourselves of things that no longer best serve us. If your closets don’t need to be cleaned, consider organizing your desk drawers or pantry shelves.

September 15, 2009: Saturn Opposite Uranus

Today, we experience the third of five exact oppositions of Saturn and Uranus, an astrological alignment that has been coloring our recent personal and collective past. These planets began dancing in this relationship last year, with their first opposition occurring on November 4, 2008 (Election Day in the U.S.). This was followed by the second opposition on February 5, 2009. In addition to the one today, there will be two others: the next one is on April 26, 2010 and the final one of the cycle will occur in July 26, 2010. (All except for the July 2010 opposition feature Saturn in Virgo and Uranus in Pisces; the July one will occur with Saturn in Libra and Uranus in Aries.)

On the surface, this push-pull between Saturn and Uranus can be extremely challenging; after all, they seem to represent polar-opposite energies. Saturn upholds rules and limits, promoting the status quo and all that has come before. Uranus, on the other hand, represents the revolutionary desire to upturn that which is accepted in hopes to find a solution that promotes evolution.

Simply said, with Saturn and Uranus, we have Same vs. Change. We may feel like we are on a see-saw, one minute wanting to “just throw it all away” and start fresh while the next minute holding on, with dear life, to all that we have created.

Yet, Saturn and Uranus can dance together really graciously. These energies can be rectified, dialoguing in a way that enables empowering and realistic change to come to life. Remember, Saturn provides structure in order to make things manifest. So if it’s change that you want, if you want to create something new in your life, Saturn can help provide the foundation and support to help make it happen. When making Uranian changes, just remember to pay homage to Saturn by infusing some pragmatism into your thinking when deciding how you can reinvent areas of your life.

Consider the proverbial apple cart as an example of working with the energies of Saturn and Uranus. You may feel a desire to overturn the apple cart. If you do, pick up the fruit and rearrange them (either on the existing cart or a new one) in a way that better serves you. This re-structuring (and Saturn-honoring) approach to change may be more productive than just moving on, with “apples” strewn on the ground, providing no benefit for anyone. Saturn/Uranus gives us a sandbox for structured chaos, which can be a really creative and provocative experience.

Saturn/Uranus Opposition Apothecary Suggestions

Free-form dance: With Saturn ruling the body and Uranus associated with independence and individuality, free-form dancing—including Ecstatic Dance, Dances of Universal Peace, and others–can be a great approach to healing during this celestial alignment. Dancing allows us to move our bodies, enhancing circulation and promoting mind/body/heart connections. It can be especially helpful in times when there’s heightened energy (Uranus) that may have a tendency to crystallize (Saturn) in our bodies.

Walnut flower essence: Sometimes we want to make changes but feel blocked by a lack of confidence and certainty instilled within us by accepting others’ visions for how we should live our life. These self-limiting thoughts may often create doubt and stand in our way of pursuing our true path. If you need support committing to a change in your life that you know, in your heart of hearts, truly will help you to evolve, regardless of what the “old tapes” say, consider Walnut flower essence. (Flower essences are made from flower-infused water and work energetically to restore emotional and mental balance. You can find them in natural food stores or holistic pharmacies.)

September 17, 2009: Pluto Square Mercury

This is the second of three times that Pluto, the planet of the unseen depths, and Mercury, the planet of communication, will square each other in the coming months. September 17 and October 10 marks the other times.

This astrological alignment gives us support to dig deep within ourselves and find the words and images that allow us to more honestly convey our ideas and feelings. Words, images, music, and other carriers of information have great power and when Pluto and Mercury are in relationship we are reminded of that.

It’s important to be especially conscious when you communicate with others during this time. While you may think you are “just talking,” others will assign great significance to what you say. Additionally, there’s the potential for buried emotions—such as hurt, anger, or resentment—to bubble up from deep within and color our communication; be aware of this in yourself and others. This connection to the deep parts of ourselves, though, can be really constructive if you are involved in any sort of therapeutic work as this period may offer you an opening to plumb the depths of your psyche even more.

Pluto Square Mercury Apothecary Suggestions

Read a myth: Mythic stories are not only entertaining but convey deep meaning related to being human. Encapsulated within are representations of archetypes that represent the sacred as well as the human psyche. Reading myths—regardless of the culture from which they originate—is a powerful way for us to connect with a level of deep understanding about ourselves and others, making it a great relaxation practice during this time.

Calendula flower essence: If your communication is tinged with feelings of anger or resentment that are coloring your discourse, consider Calendula flower essence. It can help channel that energy so that more compassion comes through with your words while also instilling a greater level of receptivity when dialoguing with others. (Flower essences are made from flower-infused water and work energetically to restore emotional and mental balance. You can find them in natural food stores or holistic pharmacies.)

September 18, 2009: Virgo New Moon (exact at 11:44 am PDT)

“Are You Being Served?” is not only the name of a BBC comedy show but it is also a mantra that we are called upon to embrace during the Virgo New Moon. As Virgo is dedicated to helping and healing, today is a great day to focus our energies on being of service to others as well as showing gratitude to those who have extended themselves graciously to us.

It is also an auspicious time to use Virgoan discernment to inventory what areas of your life are serving you and which ones are not, committing to making changes that will help you to feel more consistent with your life’s goals. With this New Moon connecting to the Saturn/Uranus opposition, our ability to plant the seeds today for positive and real change is enhanced.

This month’s New Moon falls at 26 degrees of Virgo (Sun and Moon).

September 23, 2009: Uranus Opposite Mercury

September 23 is the second of the three times that Uranus and Mercury are in this alignment in the coming months. August 21 and October 4 mark the other two.

When Uranus opposes Mercury, the air feels electrifying. It is as if there are sparks of ideas around each corner, with new thoughts seemingly coming out of the blue. With so many lightbulb-above-your-head flashes of insights occurring, it’s a good idea to have flexibility and a bit of detachment. Therefore, now may not be the best time to act on the information you receive. Rather, collect the ideas in a reservoir from which you can siphon them off, evaluating and analyzing each one to see whether it has lasting value or was just one of those great-in-the-moment ideas. If you’re traveling around this date, expect that there may be unexpected delays or inconveniences.

While the flurry of input during a Uranus/Mercury opposition can be exciting and stimulating, the buzziness it creates may tax our nervous system. As such, try to pay extra attention to this part of your body around the time of this astrological alignment.

Uranus Opposite Mercury Apothecary Suggestions

Limit caffeine intake: As a way to mollify your nerves, limiting caffeine intake may be of benefit. Instead of a second (or even first) cup of joe, try some yerba mate or green tea instead. Both have less caffeine than coffee but provide a steady energy boost. If you want to go the caffeine-free route, try rooibos or decaf green tea. Tisanes—made from soothing chamomile, lavender, or lemon balm—are a delicious way to enjoy additional calm.

Qigong: As we’re more connected to energetics during this planetary alignment, it may be a great time to practice qigong. A form of moving meditation, qigong focuses on cultivating and circulating qi, the body’s life force energy. You can find information on qigong in books and DVDs but it’s best to first practice with a skilled teacher who can show you proper techniques and sequencing.
